The AFN is dedicated to fostering knowledge, skills and attitudes, also referred to as clinical competencies, through research, dissemination, practice and mentorship. Our leadership represents over 500 years in nursing and 240 years in Forensic Nursing Science. Involvement with AFN, a forensic nursing specialty organization, helps share your knowledge and expertise through collaboration and partnerships with other members and the organization. Contribute to the body of applied forensic nursing science through presentations, best practices and focused action. Be on the inside track when it comes to new finds, practice improvement and innovation, standardized policies, practices and procedures.
Connect and engage with other forensic nurse specialists to foster collegiality, and professional endeavors to create a united voice of nursing advocacy and expertise in the response to violence.

Distinguished Member (DM-AFN)
Provides Significant Service to AFN
The purpose of the Distinguished Member designation is recognition of RN members in good standing who earns the title through service. The RN member applies to earn the 2-year title of Distinguished Member and may earn the designation every two years. Must be re-awarded to retain DM-AFN. Publicity with photograph on web site for 2 years per criteria. The board will meet each Dec. to review documents submitted. Distinguished Fellow-Academy of Forensic Nurses (DF-AFN)
Distinguished Fellow is the highest recognition, awarded to forensic nurse members who contributed significantly to Forensic Nursing over a minimum of 10 years. Fellow status is a distinction, there are no privileges associated with the distinction. This award recognizes the impact of the significant contributions and accomplishments that the individual has achieved through their scholarship, education and/or service in the advancement of the profession of Forensic Nursing. Regular membership must be maintained in order to keep the designation for life. All founding board members will be DF-AFN for life with regular membership and No renewal of Fellow status is necessary. Fellow Initials: Distinguished Fellow - Academy of Forensic Nurses (DF-AFN).
The nominee is an AFN member.
The nominee has demonstrated scholarship/achievements confirming a commitment to the development of the profession of Forensic Nursing.
The nominee, through practice, research and/or a set of principles, advances knowledge of forensic concepts in scholarship, education and service in their relation to nursing care.
The nominee will have made a significant contribution to opening and advancing opportunities in Forensic Nursing through outstanding achievements in public health, welfare and safety.

Distinguished Fellow Emeritus is the highest recognition for a retired forensic nurse, awarded to retired forensic nurses who contributed significantly to forensic nursing AND the organization. DM-AFN or DF-AFN recognition in the past 5 years is suggested for consideration of this status at the time of application.
Recognition for retired RN members in good standing. RN member applies to earn the title of Distinguished Fellow Emeritus DFE-AFN. The board will meet each Dec. to review documents submitted.
