MEMBERSHIP OVERVIEW

Join forensic nurse specialists in the Academy of Forensic Nursing (AFN), a professional organization that builds career trajectories. The AFN commitment is to advancing applied forensic nursing science in all clinical practices and in all settings. 

The AFN is dedicated to fostering knowledge, skills and attitudes, also referred to as clinical competencies, through research, dissemination, practice and mentorship. Our leadership represents over 500 years in nursing and 240 years in Forensic Nursing Science. Involvement with AFN, a forensic nursing specialty organization, helps share your knowledge and expertise through collaboration and partnerships with other members and the organization. Contribute to the body of applied forensic nursing science through presentations, best practices and focused action. Be on the inside track when it comes to new finds, practice improvement and innovation, standardized policies, practices and procedures.

Connect and engage with other forensic nurse specialists to foster collegiality, and professional endeavors to create a united voice of nursing advocacy and expertise in the response to violence.

Membership is open to individuals interested in working together to change the world for the better through scholarship, education and service.

Membership Levels 

Health Care Professional Membership 

Nursing, Physicians, Residents, Advanced Practice Providers, Psychologists, Mental Health Providers 

  • Rate $120.00 annually

    Associate Professional Membership

Other disciplines such as advocacy, social workers, law enforcement, prosecutors, forensic scientists, criminalists, public defenders and criminal defense attorneys, etc. 

  • Rate $75.00 annually

Student Membership

Students actively working towards licensure as an RN

  • Rate $60.00 annually

Retired Membership

RN, but no longer actively practicing

  • Rate $60.00 annually


Distinguished Member (DM-AFN)

Provides Significant Service to AFN   

A bi-annual recognition for RN members in good standing.  RN member applies for appointment to the organizational ladder to earn the bi-annual title of Distinguished Member. Must be re-awarded to retain DM-AFN. Publicity with photograph and summary of AFN activities for 2-years on website.

Criteria: 

  • Distinguished Member: Fellow: Active member; Requires Board Vote; Honorary title

  • Other criteria: Contributed significant, on-going AFN service; Actively promoting forensic nursing issues and/or making a significant contribution to AFN; Founding member

  • Confers no privileges

  • Fellow Initials: Academy of Forensic Nurses (DM-AFN)

Distinguished Fellow-Academy of Forensic Nurses (DF-AFN) 

Fellow is the highest recognition, awarded to forensic nurse members who contributed significantly to AFN in all areas of the organization. Fellow status is a distinction, allowing use of the acronym DF-AFN. There are no privileges associated with the distinction.

Criteria: 

  • Fellow: Active member; Requires Board Vote; Honorary title

  • Other criteria: Contributed significant, on-going AFN service; Actively promoting forensic nursing issues and/or making a significant contribution to AFN; Founding member

  • Confers no privileges

  • Fellow Initials: Academy of Forensic Nurses (DF-AFN)

Distinguished Fellow Emeritus -Academy of Forensic Nurses (DFE-AFN)

Distinguished Fellow Emeritus is the highest recognition for a retired forensic nurse, awarded to retired forensic nurses who contributed significantly to forensic nursing AND the organization.

Criteria: 

  • Distinguished Fellow Emeritus: Retired full member; Requires Board Vote; Honorary title

  • Other criteria: Contributed significant, on-going AFN service; Actively promoting forensic nursing issues and/or making a significant contribution to AFN; or Founding member

  • Privileges: Retains voting rights; retains all rights and privileges of full members; Lifetime membership; No dues

  • Initials: Distinguished Fellow Emeritus-Academy of Forensic Nurses (DFE-AFN)

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

All memberships expire on December 31st of every year. The membership fee is prorated by month if joined mid year.
